Bastards of the Bush Towards an Indigenous Australian Research Methodology

Being a ‘bastard’ is not necessarily as derogatory as it might sound. In an Australian context it can be a term of endearment, often expressed in jovial light-heartedness amongst ‘mates’ (some still use the word ‘cobber’) or at least people with a modicum of friendliness. Hodge and Mishra (1991) create a ‘complex’ out of being a ‘bastard’; a ‘bastard complex’ alludes to the sense of illegitimacy that is deeply seated in the heart/soul of a nation. Both the descendents of the original inhabitants of Australia and those of the first ‘boat people’ have their own peculiar variation of a ‘bastard complex’. Is having a sense of belonging to country only unique to being an Aboriginal?
